Little Oak Middle School

Public Grades 4-6
Summary

Little Oak Middle School is a public middle school in Slidell, Louisiana, serving 907 students in grades 4-6. The school is part of the St. Tammany Parish school district, which is ranked 19th out of 118 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Little Oak Middle School consistently outperforms the St. Tammany Parish and Louisiana state averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency. For example, the school's projected Mathematics proficiency rate for 2024-2025 is 77%, compared to 69% for the district and 60% for the state. Similarly, the school's ELA proficiency rate is projected to be 84%, higher than the district's 79% and the state's 70%. However, the school has a higher chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 15.6% to 24.6% over the past few years, which may be an area of concern.

Compared to nearby middle schools in the St. Tammany Parish district, Little Oak Middle School stands out as a high-performing institution. For instance, its projected 2024-2025 Mathematics proficiency rate of 77% is significantly higher than the rates of nearby schools like Bayou Lacombe Middle (60%), Creekside Junior High (62%), and St. Tammany Junior High (42%). The school's consistent academic performance and low student-teacher ratio may contribute to its success, but the increasing free and reduced-price lunch rate and higher chronic absenteeism rate suggest potential challenges in addressing the needs of a growing population of economically disadvantaged students.

Open Quote If you truly want an education for your child, look elsewhere. They have teachers that do not feel they need to grade assignments because they have too many students and they also give grade A for work that is not to that standard. My daughter missed 5 words on a 20 word spelling test and still received a 100%. I was told by her teacher that spelling isn’t a priority and I need to teach her to spell, however, it is a grade on her report card. When contacting the vice principal, I was told this is okay and my daughter would have stay in this class although she is not being taught. I am so disgusted with this school that we will be paying for private school next year. The teachers and the faculty have no interest in the kids, only in the state tests. When the majority of students were too far from the Accelerated Reading goals, the goals were dropped so that more students would get credit. They continue to lower the standards so that they look like they are above the standards. Teachers even give extra points on assignments when the majority of students don’t score well. This school is nowhere near as good as it looks on paper. The 4th graders are doing the same math as many 2nd graders at other schools. If they continue to lower the standards, these kids are not going to be learning anything. But the teachers get to keep making paychecks. Very sad state of education in this parish. Close Quote
