Carolyn Park Middle

Public Grades 4-6
Summary

Carolyn Park Middle in Slidell, LA, serves 233 students in grades 4 through 6 and is part of the highly-rated St. Tammany Parish school district, though it faces significant challenges as a high-poverty school with 74.68% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch—the highest rate among nearby schools like Lake Harbor Middle School (28.35%) and Gayle Sloan Middle School (21.71%).

Academically, the school shows a mixed profile. English Language Arts (ELA) is a relative strength, with 71% proficiency—above the state average of 70% and competitive with schools like Clearwood Junior High School (74%) and Slidell Junior High School (69%). However, math and social studies scores lag significantly behind district averages. A notable bright spot is 4th-grade math, where 73% of students are proficient, outperforming the state average (67%) and nearly matching the district average (77%). Unfortunately, this success is not sustained, as 5th graders experience a dramatic 31-point drop in math proficiency and a 26-point drop in social studies, suggesting a challenging transition between grades. Social studies is the school's weakest subject, with only 40% proficiency—26 points below the district average of 66% and far worse than similar schools like Bayou Lacombe Middle (59%) and Creekside Junior High (52%).

A critical concern is rapidly rising chronic absenteeism, which has climbed from 17.8% in 2021-2022 to 28.8% in 2024-2025—the second-highest rate among comparable schools and well above the district average of 21.2%. This trend likely contributes to the academic struggles, especially in 5th and 6th grades. While the school has effective literacy instruction and a strong 4th-grade math program, addressing attendance issues and supporting students through the 4th-to-5th-grade transition will be key to improving outcomes. Compared to peers like St. Tammany Junior High School, which also has high poverty (71.28%) and absenteeism (35.0%), Carolyn Park's ELA scores are notably stronger, but its social studies performance is a unique and urgent area for improvement.

Open Quote I can not stand this school, I have two children that go here. The staff seems polite but doesn't do anything to stop students from bullying and hurting others. My daughter has been stabbed in the leg, punched in the face, has been stole from and much more. My son is a special needs student and has had similar issues, they can not seem to discipline/control the problem kids..and theres so many of them its ridiculous. Ive been up to the school so much bc of their lack of handling issues. I've tried to change schools bc of the problems but was denied due to my address. I absolutely would NOT recommend this school unless you want your child being in a horrible, ghetto, unsafe school. It's is coming to the point that I am willing to home school my children bc the people that are paid aren't capable of doing their jobs properly. Close Quote
