Summary

Bayou Vista Elementary School in Morgan City, LA, is a mid-sized PK-5 school within the St. Mary Parish district, serving 340 students and known for a strong historical track record of academic excellence, though recent data shows a notable decline in its overall state ranking.

Bayou Vista has some standout strengths that set it apart from nearby schools. It excels with its Hispanic student population, ranking in the 86th percentile statewide in 2025-2026, a 4-star performance that is far better than most Louisiana schools. The school also shows impressive academic growth from 3rd to 5th grade: while 3rd-grade math proficiency (56%) lags behind the district (67%), 5th-grade math soars to 84% proficiency, well above the district (70%) and state (61%) averages. This "value-add" is a key differentiator from M.E. Norman Elementary School, where 3rd-grade math is strong but scores drop in later grades. Additionally, Bayou Vista has made remarkable progress in reducing chronic absenteeism to 16.6% in 2024-2025, significantly better than the district (23.0%) and state (22.5%) averages, and far below W.P. Foster Elementary School's 35.4% rate.

However, the school faces challenges. Its overall state ranking has dropped from the 96th percentile (5 stars) in 2016-2017 to the 65th percentile (3 stars) in 2025-2026, a 31-point decline. Nearby Berwick Elementary School (2.75 miles away) has maintained a consistent 84th percentile (4 stars), while Wyandotte Elementary School (5.32 miles away) has improved to the 76th percentile (4 stars). Bayou Vista also shows a widening gap in serving students from low socio-economic status, dropping from the 85th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 67th percentile in 2025-2026. The school's performance for White students has declined to the 36th percentile (2 stars), suggesting instructional strategies may be more effective for some groups than others. The competitive local landscape includes Stephensville Elementary School (7.32 miles away in St. Martin Parish), a powerhouse with 92% math and 88% ELA proficiency.

Open Quote I switched my daughter from a private school to this school in 4th grade. I was very pleased with what I found. The teachers went out of their way to help her and make her feel welcome. She was behind but they quickly had her caught up. Her fifth grade year there was a great one with a fantastic home room teacher who believes in hands on learning. Overall I was very satisfied with the experience. The prinicpal is very involved and on top of things. The only problem I found was that they could use more room and a gym. Close Quote
