Summary

Lessie Moore Elementary School in Pineville, LA, serves 392 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd grade and is part of the Rapides Parish school district, where over 95% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has recently become a standout "turnaround" story, climbing from the 10th percentile statewide in 2021-2022 to the 43rd percentile in 2025-2026—its highest ranking in over a decade. This dramatic improvement sets it apart from nearby high-poverty peers like L.S. Rugg Elementary School and D.F. Huddle Elementary, which remain stuck in the bottom 20-30% of Louisiana elementary schools.

Lessie Moore's success is most evident in English Language Arts (ELA), where 66% of 3rd graders are proficient—nearly matching the district average of 69% and slightly above the state average of 64%. This is a significant achievement for a school with such high poverty, especially compared to similar schools like L.S. Rugg (47% ELA proficiency) and D.F. Huddle (57% ELA proficiency). However, math proficiency (43%) lags far behind the district (64%) and state (62%), highlighting a clear area for growth. The school also excels with its African American students, ranking in the 52nd percentile statewide, and has seen a remarkable 49-percentile-point jump in performance for low-income students since 2021-2022.

Despite a chronic absenteeism rate of 23.6%—higher than top-performing magnet schools like Phoenix Magnet Elementary (6.0%) and Peabody Montessori Elementary (2.3%)—Lessie Moore is still achieving academic gains. This suggests that its in-class instruction and interventions are highly effective for students who attend regularly. While it doesn't compete with magnet schools like Phoenix or Rosenthal Montessori, which serve different demographics, Lessie Moore is a clear outperformer among its true peers and could serve as a model for other high-poverty schools in the district.

Open Quote This school is the best thing that has happened to our 2 boys. It is a shame that we can't get the same funding to make this school the best that it can be. The teachers can only work with what they are given. I think if we had the opportunity to grow we would be a better graded school, but unlike other "top priority" schools we are overlooked. I think we deserve the same chances to prove our kids are worth the same as everyone else's kids in this parish Close Quote
