Summary

Richwood High School in Monroe, LA, is a public school serving 400 students in grades 8 through 12 as part of the Ouachita Parish School District, and it serves a community with very high economic need, where over 92% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Richwood has faced significant challenges, including a historically high dropout rate of 7.0% in the 2023-2024 school year—more than double the state average and five times higher than the district average. In contrast, nearby Sterlington High School reported a 0.0% dropout rate during the same period. Academic proficiency at Richwood is consistently below district and state averages, with Geometry being a particular area of concern (22% proficient in 2024-2025), while Sterlington High School achieved 83% proficiency in the same subject. However, there is a remarkable bright spot: chronic absenteeism dropped dramatically from 48.9% in 2023-2024 to just 14.9% in 2024-2025, now lower than both the district and state averages. This suggests that targeted interventions are making a real difference in getting students to class.

When compared to similar schools in the area, Richwood is a middle performer. It outperforms Carroll High School in nearly every metric but lags behind Wossman High School, which has shown more consistent improvement. The school’s graduation rate has fluctuated between 73.6% and 83.6% over the last five years, but the high dropout rate remains a critical concern for the community. On a positive note, the school’s performance for its largest demographic group has shown a clear upward trend, improving from the 20th percentile to the 44th percentile over the past two years. This progress, combined with the dramatic improvement in attendance, offers hope that Richwood is on a path toward better outcomes for its students.
