Summary

Sterlington Elementary School is a high-performing public school in Sterlington, LA, serving approximately 800 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Ouachita Parish School District, and it has a long history of academic excellence with consistent 4 or 5-star ratings since 2015.

This school stands out for its exceptional academic performance, with recent proficiency rates of 75% in Math, 82% in ELA, and 68% in Social Studies—well above district and state averages. It is a clear academic leader in the region, closely competing with nearby Kiroli Elementary School and Sallie Humble Elementary School, though Sterlington’s performance is more consistent over time. One of its most remarkable strengths is its support for Special Education students, ranking in the 93rd percentile statewide and earning a 5-star rating for this subgroup. Additionally, the school has an exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of just 8.8%, which is less than half the district rate of 18.5% and far better than schools like Swartz Upper Elementary School (12.5%) or Lakeshore School (16.2%).

Despite a higher student-teacher ratio of 20:1 compared to peers like Kiroli (15.7:1) and Sallie Humble (12.6:1), Sterlington consistently outperforms them, indicating highly effective teaching and classroom management. However, there is a slight downward trend in its overall state ranking, from the 93rd percentile to the 80th percentile in recent years, and a noticeable dip in 5th-grade performance, particularly in Math (67%) and Social Studies (56%), which may warrant attention. The school also shows a fascinating contrast in subgroup performance: it is top-tier for Special Education students but only average for low socioeconomic status students, suggesting a need for targeted improvement in that area. Overall, Sterlington Elementary offers a stable, supportive learning environment with strong academics and exceptional support for students with disabilities.

Open Quote This school is concerned with white flight parents and maintaining low special education numbers, rather than providing students with the necessary supports. They will continue to place students in cycles of RTI after RTI when interventions have stalled or been unsuccessful and push increasing medication doses in carefully worded phrases so that parents are gaslit into believing the students are problematic when the teachers lack classroom management skills and want silent motionless statutes because if they have to request assistance from Wheeler they get in trouble and screeched at. It’s a vicious cycle. Word gets around in this hillbilly sundown town and favoritism gets you placed in the highly effective teacher’s classroom while being less than known gets you placed in the less than proficient teacher’s classroom which hinders progress.
Avoid and choose Swartz lower/upper or the West Side Drew/Boley/Kiroli. Close Quote

Open Quote This is a fantastic school serving students from PK through 5th grade. The faculty, staff and administration is top notch! The student body is a wonderful mix of children. The school offers classes that serve special needs, gifted and talented children in addition to regular education classes. They invite parents and grandparents for special functions and parents and grandparents are welcome to eat with the students at any time. The school is a beautiful mix of bright colors and geometric shapes. What a fun place for children to go each day to learn! Close Quote
