Summary

The Dufrocq School is a public elementary school in Baton Rouge, LA, serving 431 students from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade, with a high percentage of students (73.3%) qualifying for free or reduced lunch, indicating a significant population from low socio-economic backgrounds.

The Dufrocq School shows a relative strength in English Language Arts (ELA), with 61% of students proficient in 2025-2026, compared to 42% in Math and 38% in Social Studies. A notable "bright spot" is the 4th grade, where students achieved a 72% proficiency rate in ELA (matching the state average) and 54% in Social Studies (exceeding the district average). The school also benefits from a low student-teacher ratio of 11.6:1, which is much lower than nearby schools like Capitol Elementary School (15.4:1) and CSAL Elementary (32.3:1). However, the school struggles with chronic absenteeism, which has risen from 16.5% in 2021-2022 to 24.6% in 2024-2025, now above the state average of 22.5%. This is a critical issue, as high absenteeism is strongly linked to lower academic achievement.

Compared to nearby schools, The Dufrocq School is a stable option within its high-poverty neighborhood. It outperforms schools with similar or higher poverty rates, such as Melrose Elementary School (96% free/reduced lunch) and Park Elementary School (93% free/reduced lunch), in nearly every metric. However, it is outperformed by magnet schools like B. R. Foreign Language Acad. Immersion Magnet and Belfair Montessori School, which have lower poverty rates. The school's state ranking has declined from the 54th percentile in 2018-2019 to the 22nd percentile in 2025-2026, but its test scores have remained relatively stable, suggesting it is being outpaced by other schools improving faster. The exceptional 4th-grade performance offers a potential model for improvement, and the school should explore replicating those successful strategies to other grades.

Open Quote Dufrocq School is the worst magnet school in EBRP. Lets start with the staff, it is so hilarious that the staff cannot even read a single calendar date properly. When I submitted my child's typed absence letter, the staff could not follow simple English language and I had to explain the dates of absence. The staff comes out as rude but I don't think they are but they are just illiterate. Now faculty, abhorrent! I had my two babies in Dufrocq, one graduated from 5th grade and could not perform well in middle school with kids from other good magnet schools. And when I saw that I removed my other child from her third grade put her in Forest heights, she is way happier there. Kids deserve a better treatment, rich curriculum, elementary education is the foundation. Dufrocq not only delivers poorest curriculum in EBRP but the kids are very unhappy there. Dufrocq needs a serious overhaul! Close Quote

Open Quote 90% of the school has very unprofessional teaching staff. Teaching is a challenging profession requires a balance of strict disciple and love. Dufrocq teachers think that they are following a strict disciple code but everything they do is creating a environment which is comfortable for themselves so, they can handle kids easily without much effort. Very threatening atmosphere for kids, by the time kids graduate Dufrocq they are morally damaged. More than academic skills a kids needs self-confidence. Having said that Dufrocq doesnot have a friendly and good school atmosphere for kids they also do not have any academic growth. On top of that there is no diversity at all. It is just an below average school, I have no idea how they manage magnet program:( Close Quote
