Summary

Claiborne Fundamental Elementary School is a K-5 school in Shreveport, LA, serving 396 students within the Caddo Parish school district, and it stands out as a top-tier academic performer despite serving a community where 62.6% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school consistently achieves elite results, ranking in the 97th percentile statewide (18th out of 690 elementary schools) for the 2025-2026 school year and earning a 5-star rating every year for the past decade. Its academic success is remarkable when compared to nearby schools. For instance, while Fairfield Magnet School and South Highlands Elementary Magnet School also achieve top rankings, they serve much wealthier populations (11-18% free/reduced lunch). In contrast, Claiborne is the only school in its immediate area that combines a high-poverty student body with top-tier academic results. Its proficiency rates are extraordinary: 100% of students were proficient in Mathematics and 82% in Social Studies, far exceeding district averages. The school also excels at serving historically underserved groups, ranking 8th in the state for low socioeconomic status students and 11th for African American students.

Another key differentiator is Claiborne's exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 6.5%, compared to the district average of 31.0% and rates as high as 43.0% at nearby J. S. Clark Elementary School. This suggests a strong culture of attendance and family engagement, likely driven by the "Fundamental" school model, which emphasizes parental involvement. However, the model alone isn't a guarantee of success—Judson Fundamental Elementary School, just 1.55 miles away, ranks in the 42nd percentile. Claiborne's consistent, decade-long performance, even through the COVID-19 pandemic, shows a deeply embedded system of excellence that makes it a true beacon in the Caddo Parish community.

Open Quote The faculty is exceptional. They are very dedicated to motivating students and bringing out their very best efforts. My child was challenged and it paid off. I would highly recommend this magnet school more than the other so called "elite" schools like South Highlands, eden gardens, and fairfield. This school has a heart like no other and I am so glad we made the choice to come here. Close Quote
