Summary

Cherokee Park Elementary School in Shreveport, LA, is a small PK-5 school within the Caddo Parish district, serving 282 students in a community where over 95% of families qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most remarkable finding at Cherokee Park is its 5th-grade math performance: in the 2025-2026 school year, 100% of these students were proficient in math. This perfect score far exceeds nearby schools like Apollo Elementary (57%) and North Highlands Elementary (65%), making it a standout achievement. Overall, Cherokee Park has a unique "math strong, ELA weak" profile, with math proficiency (59%) significantly outpacing English Language Arts (39%). This contrasts with neighboring schools, where ELA scores are typically higher or closer to math scores. The school has also shown improvement in its state ranking, climbing from the 9th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 17th percentile in 2025-2026, suggesting recent efforts are gaining traction.

However, challenges remain. Chronic absenteeism is a critical issue at 32.4%, well above the state average of 22.5%, and likely hindering progress in ELA and other subjects. While Cherokee Park boasts a low student-teacher ratio of 10.5:1—the lowest among nearby schools—this advantage hasn't fully translated into overall high performance, indicating that factors like poverty and attendance are major barriers. The school's performance for economically disadvantaged students has been inconsistent, showing a "two-steps-forward, one-step-back" pattern. For parents, the key takeaway is that Cherokee Park has a promising math program, especially in 5th grade, but addressing attendance and literacy will be crucial for sustained improvement.
