Summary

Bayou L'Ourse Primary School is a small, rural elementary school in Morgan City, LA, serving 150 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade as part of the Assumption Parish school district.

This school has experienced a sharp decline in academic performance over the last two years, dropping from a 3-star rating to a 2-star rating. While its English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency rate of 66% is close to the state average, its math (49%) and social studies (47%) scores are significantly below. This is a stark contrast to nearby Berwick Elementary School, which excels in all three subjects. A major concern is the school's high chronic absenteeism rate of 23.9%, which is much higher than top-performing neighbors like Stephensville Elementary School (8.1%). Interestingly, Stephensville achieves its high results despite having a much higher percentage of students on free/reduced lunch, suggesting that a strong school culture around attendance can be a powerful driver of success.

On a positive note, Bayou L'Ourse has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.1:1, which is lower than many peers and offers potential for more individualized attention. There is also a glimmer of hope in early learning: 5th graders who previously attended this school scored above the state average in ELA and social studies, suggesting strong foundational skills are being built in the early grades. However, the school's leadership must urgently address the root causes of its declining math and social studies scores, high absenteeism, and poor performance among male students to reverse its recent downward trend.

Open Quote I have three children. My oldest child no longer attends bayou lourse primary but since kn they have told me she has a reading problem. The school said they would put her in a program to help her either reading 180 or 504. my child never recieved any help from bayou lourse primary and now that she is in middle school she strugles. i wouldnt recommend this school. my middle child is very smart and has been reading since prek but all of a sudden they are saying she needs help which she does not!!! They should know she checked out a library book from the school that was all about cats. well it was all about cats and not for an elementry student because it talked about reproduction. my youngest child has just started to have a few problems this year and i have asked if they have something they could recommend that i can help her with but of course no help at all. i am willing to help my child but i cant help if they wont let me know what i am to do. i have asked if they could point me in the right direction but yet i just get the run around.
