Summary

Nixon Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 644 students in grades PK-6 in Chicago, Illinois. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 698 out of 811 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Nixon Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Illinois elementary schools over the past 10 years, with only 21.3% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 15.3% proficient in math, significantly underperforming the district and state averages. The school also faces challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.4% to 40.8% over the past few years, much higher than the surrounding schools. Additionally, Nixon Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic status backgrounds, with 90-93% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

While Nixon Elementary struggles with academic achievement and attendance, the nearby schools such as McAuliffe, Funston, Lloyd, and West Park generally outperform it, despite also serving high-poverty student populations. This suggests that factors beyond just socioeconomic status, such as school leadership, teaching quality, and resources, may be contributing to the differences in performance.

Open Quote Don't be fooled by any 5 star reviews. This is a horrible school that at most prepares the students to become a minimum wage workers. It's not enough to say "academically not challenging". It's just as bad as it gets. I don't know what exactly they teach, but I can tell you that my son who is a good student knows next to nothing!!! And repeatedly I got the impression that they don't care if the kids learn anything. I'm seriously worried about his performance in the 7th grade in a new school. At all cost I will try to avoid sending my younger child to this place. It's like giving up on him. This school academically sucks BIG time!!!! Close Quote
