Summary

Black Magnet Elementary School is a public K-8 school in Chicago, Illinois, serving a diverse student population. The school stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, outpacing both the Chicago Public Schools District 299 and the state of Illinois in English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Black Magnet Elementary School's ELA proficiency rate was 70.1%, compared to 42.8% for the district and 53.1% for the state. In Mathematics, the school's proficiency rate was 51.3%, compared to 27.3% for the district and 38.5% for the state. The school's performance is particularly impressive in the lower grades, with 3rd-grade ELA and Mathematics proficiency rates of 63.9% and 80.6%, respectively. Additionally, the school excels in serving its African American and low socioeconomic status student populations, ranking 9th and 26th out of Illinois elementary schools in these subgroups, respectively.

While Black Magnet Elementary School's academic achievements are noteworthy, the school has faced challenges with fluctuating chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 12.4% to 40.1% in recent years. This is an area of concern, as it could impact student learning and achievement if not addressed. Nonetheless, the school's consistent high performance, particularly in comparison to nearby schools like Hoyne Elementary School, Coles Elementary Language Academy, and Washington H Elementary School, makes it a standout option for families in the area.

Open Quote My son has been enrolled at Black Magnet for two years now. Black Magnet has two branches, one school has students from K-3 and the other branch has 4-8 grades, so my son attends the younger kids branch. I think Black is a pretty good school, academically they challenge the students and they allow them to explore their creative side, as a child. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is, they don't have foreign language. I spoke to the Principle Mr. McIntosh, who also knows me by name, and he stated that they currently don't have the resources to accommodate a foreign language at the smaller branch, but they are working on it. I do have to admit they do have more computer classes and foreign languages at the bigger branches. Overall I am pleased with Black Magnet and would recommend it to everybody. Close Quote
