Summary

Madison Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 159 students. The school is part of the Cedar Rapids Community School District, which is ranked 279 out of 313 districts in Iowa and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Madison Elementary consistently outperforms the Cedar Rapids district and the state of Iowa in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, Madison's 3rd grade students scored 73.3% proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 58.5% for the district and 67.9% for the state. However, the school has relatively high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 20.7% to 35.7% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average. Additionally, Madison Elementary has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 48.48% to 60% over the past few years.

When compared to other nearby elementary schools in the Cedar Rapids district, such as Maple Grove Elementary, Madison Elementary stands out as a relatively high-performing school, particularly in terms of test scores. However, the school's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 184th out of 557 Iowa elementary schools in 2023-2024 to 204th out of 576 in 2024-2025, suggesting that the school may be struggling to maintain its academic performance relative to other schools in the state. Addressing the high chronic absenteeism rates and potential equity challenges could be crucial for the school to maintain and improve its academic performance over time.

Open Quote Some of the office staff can be rude and condescending, but the principle is amazing and more than makes up for it. I am not a fan of the new grading scales but that is across the state so it isn't anything that is only wrong with this school. It is disappointing that a school a few blocks away give free breakfast & lunch to all kids and we have to pay. Overall we have had a decent experience with this school, but nothing to get excited about. Close Quote

Open Quote While this school may be fine for children without special needs, I would not recommend it for kids with special needs. They do not believe in "labels" and are against IEPs... which means that if your child has a special need... they may not get the services they need (and likely won't get any services without a fight). They particularly lack in ability to identify and recognize disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders (even when a child is already diagnosed). Otherwise it is a small school, probably fine for kids with no special needs who do not have difficulty making friends (a little cliquey at times). Close Quote
