Summary

Floyd Middle School is a public middle school located in Mableton, Georgia, serving 846 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Cobb County School District, which is ranked 54th out of 206 school districts in Georgia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Floyd Middle School has consistently underperformed compared to the Cobb County and Georgia averages in most subject areas and grade levels, there are some bright spots. For example, the school has outperformed the district and state in Algebra I, with proficiency rates ranging from 71.4% to 100% in recent years. However, the school's overall test scores, with proficiency rates ranging from 27.6% to 47.2% in English Language Arts and Mathematics, are significantly lower than the district and state averages. This has contributed to the school's ranking in the bottom half of Georgia middle schools for the past several years, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

One potential factor contributing to the school's challenges is its high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, ranging from 80.36% to 87.35% in recent years. This is significantly higher than the Cobb County district average. When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Tapp Middle School and Griffin Middle School, which serve similar student populations but have higher test scores and rankings, it becomes clear that Floyd Middle School faces significant challenges. However, the school's high spending per student, ranging from $8,834 to $9,579, suggests that there may be opportunities for improvement with the right strategies and interventions.

Open Quote The school is a great learning environment. The teachers are dedicated to the students and with parent involvement your kids will excel. They have programs that are not available at other schools and it is one of the best kept secrets in Cobb. The test scores are skewed and not an accurate view of the things that this school offers. My kids can just be kids and they are nurtured in an inclusive leaning environment. That's exactly what they need at this age. Close Quote

Open Quote Floyd teachers and staff are dedicated to their students. Technology plays a part in every classroom, tutoring is provided before and after school, teachers dedicate time to provide extracurricular activities with clubs and art/music programs - art club, chess club, robotics, Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, photography club, chorus, environmental wellness club, and more. Student interests are encouraged and supported with Hispanic Heritage, Black History Month, and Floyd's Got Talent events. Floyd boasts TWO teachers chosen for recognition as 11 Alive Class Acts: Mrs. Eva Miano and Ms. Gennie Shelton. Community involvement includes yearly school-wide participation in fundraising for Rely for Life. Floyd students go on to high school, magnet programs, college and career training… and we come back to Floyd. We return to share our experiences, successes, and sometimes our struggles with people we know are always in “our corner” and love us. Close Quote
