Summary

River Springs Middle School in Orange City, FL, serves 1,218 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Volusia district, where just over half of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school presents a unique profile: it excels in advanced math courses, with 84% proficiency in Algebra 1 and 88% in Geometry End-of-Course exams—matching top-performing schools in Seminole County. However, grade-level math proficiency is a significant concern, with only 39% of 7th graders and 48% of 8th graders meeting state standards, well below Florida averages. This creates a "tale of two schools" where advanced students thrive while many others struggle to reach grade-level benchmarks.

Chronic absenteeism is a persistent challenge, with a rate of 29.3% for the 2023-2024 school year—slightly better than the Volusia district average of 34.1% but still alarmingly high compared to nearby Seminole County schools like Rock Lake Middle School (9.1%). The school also lags in Civics, with 75% proficiency versus the state average of 77%, and in English Language Arts, where 7th grade proficiency is just 46% compared to 62% statewide. Over the past decade, River Springs' state ranking has steadily declined from the 54th percentile to the 33rd percentile, indicating it is not keeping pace with improvements seen elsewhere in Florida.

When compared to other Volusia middle schools like Heritage Middle School and Deltona Middle School, River Springs performs similarly in most metrics, though it stands out for its lower chronic absenteeism. The contrast with Seminole County schools is stark—schools like Sanford Middle School achieve 70-80% proficiency in FAST ELA and Math, highlighting significant district-level disparities. With spending of $9,085 per student—less than most peers—and a student-teacher ratio of 19.6:1, River Springs faces resource challenges that may contribute to its struggles in providing a strong, grade-level education for the majority of its students.

Open Quote I have to say I am truly disappointed in this school. There is no communication between the school and parents. If I call the school to express any concern or a complaint, you would think the principal would contact the parent back to address issues but that is not the case. The school year is drawing to a close and I don't believe I have seen the principal one time throughout the school year and I am at the school daily dropping off and picking up my child. It's almost as though the principal intentionally hides and avoids the parents. Any emails to teachers generally go left unanswered by staff. Also, I am utterly disgusted at the amount of bullying and violence that goes on at this school. My child has been hit on numerous occasions. Teachers turn a blind eye to the problem children and, when I report it, I'm constantly told that there is a "no hitting" policy and the school has a bully awareness program. If a student tries to report being hit, the staff has a tendency to refuse to listen and just 'sentence' the students to detention (even the child who was being hit and not hitting others). I don't see any potential for this school without new admin and staff changes first. Close Quote
