Summary

South Sumter High School in Bushnell, FL, serves 1,077 students in grades 7 through 12 and is part of the Sumter district, which ranks 26th out of 70 districts in Florida. The school has a consistent 3-star rating and a state ranking in the 56th percentile for the 2025-2026 school year, with about 42% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch.

One of the school's standout features is its exceptional graduation rate of 97.6% for the 2024-2025 school year, which significantly exceeds the state average of 92.2% and outperforms nearby schools like Hernando High School (91.3%) and Leesburg High School (91.7%). However, this high graduation rate exists alongside a notable challenge: chronic absenteeism at 39.4%, which is higher than the district average of 26.9% and the state average of 31.4%, though it is lower than many surrounding schools like Leesburg High (59.1%) and Hernando High (55.8%). This paradox suggests the school may have strong credit recovery programs or flexible scheduling that help students graduate despite missing significant school time.

Academically, South Sumter shows strength in Biology 1 (76% proficient, matching the district and exceeding the state average of 74%) and 9th Grade English Language Arts (58% proficient, near the state average), but struggles significantly in Algebra 1 (34% proficient), which is well below the district average of 79% and the state average of 63%. Compared to its district peer Wildwood Middle/ High School, South Sumter has a higher graduation rate and lower chronic absenteeism, but Wildwood outperforms in Algebra 1 (68% proficient). The school also spends less per student ($13,273) than Wildwood ($15,499), yet achieves a higher state ranking, positioning South Sumter as a relatively strong educational option in a region where many surrounding schools face lower rankings and higher absenteeism.

Open Quote Children may like the school fairly well, but after graduation they will be no where near college-ready, and will probably have to re-take courses at college. Have pleanty of funds available even if they get scholarships. School activities very expensive (senior trip 900.00 and lockers 20.00, just for starters. Close Quote
