Summary

Wicklow Elementary School in Sanford, FL, is a PK-5 school within the highly-rated Seminole district, serving 585 students in a community where over 86% of families qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite being in a top-tier district, Wicklow has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Florida elementary schools over the past five years, a stark contrast to nearby schools like Goldsboro Elementary Magnet (87th percentile) and Hamilton Elementary (74th percentile). The school spends more per student ($14,475) than any nearby school—over $4,000 more than Goldsboro—and has the lowest student-teacher ratio (12.1:1) in the area, yet these resources have not translated into academic gains. This suggests the challenge is not a lack of funding, but how funds are used. Chronic absenteeism is also a persistent issue, hovering around 24-27%, which is higher than high-performing peers like Seminole Science Charter School (14.0%).

An interesting anomaly is the school’s 6th-grade math performance, which scored 95% proficiency in 2025-2026 and 100% in 2024-2025—far exceeding the school’s own 5th-grade math scores (15% and 18%) and even district and state averages. This could indicate a highly effective teacher or a small cohort of advanced students. Overall, while poverty is a major factor, Wicklow’s performance is notably worse than Bentley Elementary, which has a lower poverty rate (69.1%) but significantly outperforms Wicklow in most subjects, indicating other school-level factors are at play.

Open Quote We have been at Wicklow since Kindergarten in 2016. Our child is now in 2nd grade. As a previous reviewer mentioned, we were skeptical about sending our child there bc of test scores, ratings etc. I don't believe it is a "rough part of the neighborhood" but I suppose that is subjective. Because it is a Title 1 school they do have many more resources that other schools do not. Our child has thrived at Wicklow. He has made great friends and has had amazing, thoughtful and caring teachers in each grade. Granted we have not had any issues with teachers or students that needed to be addressed so I can not comment of how such issues are resolved. I am on campus occasionally to help in the classroom etc and have only seen positive interactions with students. I always recommend Wicklow to parents that I met. Because of the region/cluster students are randomly assigned to schools. You should not be hesitant at all to send your child to Wicklow. Close Quote

Open Quote I gave this school a chance despite its reputation of being in a rough area of town. I should have not. My daughter has consistently been one of only 2-3 white kids in her class every year and she’s been bullied for it. The school fails to report this up and puts temporary fixes on the issue this year we’re done with it and transferring her out. When reporting this to the school board transfers office Wicklow got defensive and dismissed knowing about the bullying saying it must be reported “repeatedly” to be considered bullying. I guess the countless times my daughter has asked to be moved for this issue and the communication we’ve had with the teacher don’t count. The school im sure is protecting its reputation and it’s allotted budget. We are done with our 8 year old being told she’s “racist for being white.” Close Quote
