Summary

Altamonte Elementary School in Altamonte Springs, FL, serves 577 students in grades PK-5 within the highly-ranked Seminole County School District, though it faces significant challenges related to poverty and chronic absenteeism.

Altamonte Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Florida elementary schools, currently sitting at the 38th percentile for the 2025-2026 school year. This performance gap is especially noticeable when compared to nearby Seminole County schools like Sabal Point Elementary (95th percentile) and Woodlands Elementary (85th percentile). The school's most pressing issue is its extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 35.1%, which is the highest among all nearby schools and more than double the rates at Sabal Point (15.0%) and Woodlands (14.4%). Math proficiency is a particular concern, with scores dropping from 51% in 3rd grade to just 40% in 5th grade, creating a 20-25 percentage point gap below the district average. Despite spending $12,712 per student—the highest among its Seminole County peers—the school has not seen corresponding academic results, suggesting that resources are being directed toward addressing the challenges of serving a predominantly low-income population.

There are some positive signs, however. After hitting a low point in the 2022-2023 school year, Altamonte Elementary has improved its state ranking for three consecutive years, moving from the 29th to the 38th percentile and earning a 2-star rating. This upward trend suggests that recent interventions may be starting to have an effect. The school's challenges are not unique to its district; nearby Lake Sybelia Elementary in the Orange County district has an even higher absenteeism rate of 36.6%, while Dommerich Elementary in the same district boasts a 6.2% rate and top-1% performance, highlighting how poverty levels strongly influence school outcomes.

Open Quote Principal is a jerk, there is no inclusion for disable students and the ESE class works at PRE-K level, even when it has students in different grades. No curriculum for ESE class either. Total mess. Run away! Close Quote

Open Quote AES used to be such a great school. Current principal has driven it into the ground, and I don't understand why no one will do anything about it. Close Quote
