Summary

Midway Elementary School in Sanford, FL, is a public school serving 789 students in grades PK-5 within the highly-rated Seminole County School District, though the school itself has historically performed below district averages and serves a predominantly low-income population with over 84% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

One of the most critical issues at Midway is chronic absenteeism, which reached 31.3% in the 2023-2024 school year—significantly higher than the district average of 25.3% and on par with the state average. This is a major differentiator from nearby schools like Hamilton Elementary School, which serves a similarly high-poverty population (76.6%) but achieves far better academic results and has a lower chronic absenteeism rate of 30.4%. The school's most striking academic weakness is in 5th-grade math, where only 8% of students were proficient in 2024-2025, compared to 61% at Hamilton and 52% district-wide. This "5th-grade math cliff" is a persistent trend, with proficiency dropping dramatically from 39% in 4th grade to 22% in 5th grade in 2025-2026. Interestingly, Midway's 6th-grade math scores are an anomaly, with 95% proficiency in 2025-2026, far exceeding district and state averages, suggesting a potential issue with the 5th-grade curriculum or instruction.

Despite these challenges, Midway's per-student spending ($10,556) is in the middle of the pack compared to peer schools, indicating that funding alone is not the problem. The nearby example of Hamilton Elementary, which is only 1.36 miles away and ranked in the 74th percentile (4 stars) versus Midway's 38th percentile (2 stars), shows that high poverty does not have to dictate low performance. This suggests that targeted interventions in attendance, 5th-grade math instruction, and overall school culture could significantly improve outcomes for Midway students.

Open Quote We have two children at Midway currently, and they absolutely look forward to going to school every day here!! They come home with smiles on their faces and in a good mood. The atmosphere is just like it says when you walk in the front entrance - "Where Excellence takes Center Stage!"

We have special needs children that are both in the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) programs with IEP's (Individual Education Plans) and they fit right in the mainstream classes!! One of them is now a 5h grader, and the other is in his 2nd year of Pre-K. This is our 2nd year at Midway and we continue to be impressed with all aspects of their education. We have been awarded McKay scholarships and have been unable to utilize them locally. But here at Midway - The Teachers, Therapists and Administration are all very knowledgeable and experienced. They have worked very closely with us to develop fair goals and interventions on their academic education programs and tailored them to meet my children's' needs/goals. We feel like we really matter to them, and I am able to go to work and feel comfortable knowing that my children are going to have a great day and be taken care of the way they should be, I never have to worry.

Performing arts also has played a large role in their growth and development. My children love their Art, Band (flute), Orchestra (Violin &Cello) and Dance classes. The performances are very enjoyable to attend.

Seminole County has excellent schools, this one truly stands out for me and has made a HUGE difference to our family - Thanks!! Close Quote
