Summary

Booker High School in Sarasota, FL, is a comprehensive public high school serving 1,479 students in grades 9-12 within the highly-rated Sarasota County School District, where over 62% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The most striking feature of Booker High School is its "graduation rate paradox." While its academic test scores in math and English Language Arts lag behind district and state averages—for example, only 48% of students were proficient in Algebra 1 in the 2025-2026 school year—its graduation rate has climbed impressively to 93.2%, now above the state average and nearly matching the district's high rate. This suggests the school excels at keeping students on track to earn diplomas, even if many are not meeting grade-level benchmarks. However, the school struggles with chronic absenteeism at 25.1%, significantly higher than nearby Riverview High School (22.7%) and Sarasota High School (22.4%). Interestingly, Booker spends more per student ($14,460) than these higher-performing peers, yet achieves lower academic results, indicating funds may be directed toward support systems that boost graduation rather than core instruction.

Booker shows clear strengths in science and history, with Biology proficiency (77%) exceeding the state average, but math remains a major challenge. There is a positive trend, however, as Algebra 1 proficiency has nearly doubled from 27% to 48% in recent years. For context, the nearby Sarasota Military Academy serves a similar student population but achieves a near-perfect graduation rate (99.3%) and stronger math scores, while the top-performing Suncoast Polytechnical High School demonstrates what's possible within the same district with dramatically higher proficiency rates across all subjects.

Open Quote Booker is two different high schools. The VPA is a highly-ranked, competitive college prep high school - to the point that almost all VPA classes and students are segregated in separate buildings from the rest of the school. If your child is not in the VPA, they don't have the time or inclination to do right by them. After a number of incidents where administration showed their glaring lack of commitment to my non-
VPA child's best interests, I transferred my child to a different high school and saw grades go from Ds to A/Bs in one year. Close Quote
