Summary

Azalea Elementary School in St. Petersburg, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 426 students in grades PK through 5, and it is part of the high-performing Pinellas County School District. This school has earned a solid 4-star rating and ranks in the 72nd percentile statewide for the 2025-2026 school year, showing consistent improvement from the 53rd percentile just a few years ago. With a low student-teacher ratio of 12.9:1 and a per-student spending of $16,929—significantly higher than the district average—Azalea provides a more intimate learning environment and invests heavily in its students, though its academic results are above average rather than elite.

Azalea stands out for its strong early literacy and math foundations, particularly in 3rd grade, where 71% of students were proficient in English Language Arts and 65% in math in the 2025-2026 school year. However, a notable pattern is a "5th grade slump" in math, where proficiency often lags behind the district average, suggesting a need for support in upper elementary math concepts. In contrast, 5th grade science is a consistent bright spot, with 72% proficiency beating both the district and state averages. The school also faces a challenge with chronic absenteeism at 23.7%, which is better than the district average of 30.6% but much higher than top-performing neighbors like Pasadena Fundamental Elementary School (8.1%).

Geographically, Azalea is sandwiched between two very different schools: Pasadena Fundamental Elementary (1.17 miles away) is a 5-star benchmark with lower poverty rates and higher test scores, while Seventy-Fourth St. Elementary (1.34 miles away) struggles with higher poverty and chronic absenteeism. Azalea’s ability to outperform the latter, despite similar socioeconomic challenges, highlights the effectiveness of its programs and leadership. Overall, Azalea is a reliable, improving school that punches above its weight, making it a strong choice for families seeking a supportive environment with a focus on early academic growth.

Open Quote My son started azalea elementary this week. So far we have been given no information about anything that happens there. I have NOT received a class schedule, lunch menu, school information, NOTHING! School started on August 22 and they told me there would be a meeting August 31st about these issues. UMM, isn't that a little backwards. The other day when I picked my son up there was no supervision (he's in Kindergarten) and I simply took him out of line, no one noticed he was gone. He also told me a friend suggested they make guns out of toys in the classroom, I asked where his teacher was and he said "on her computer." Lastly, dismissal time is 1:50pm, I happened to show up early at 1:30 and the kindergarten was already outside at the curb. They said they don't announce it, but Kindergarten is released at 1:30. So I am just supposed to let my child stand outside for 20 minutes with minimal supervision. THIS IS INSANE!! I am pulling my son out of this school ASAP! Close Quote
