Summary

Lockhart Elementary in Orlando, FL, is a public school serving 452 students in grades PK-5 within the Orange district, where 69% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school faces significant challenges, with academic performance ranking in the 10th percentile statewide—far below the district and state averages in math and English Language Arts. For example, only 33% of 5th graders are proficient in math, compared to 65% at nearby Lake Weston Elementary and 62% at Pinecrest Creek Charter. Similarly, 5th-grade ELA proficiency sits at 38%, trailing Rosemont Elementary (53%) and Bear Lake Elementary (63%).

A major factor driving these struggles is a severe chronic absenteeism problem. While the rate has improved from a staggering 53.3% in 2021-2022 to 31.2% in 2023-2024, it remains higher than peers like Lake Gem Elementary (23.8%) and Lakeville Elementary (26.5%). Interestingly, Lockhart spends a relatively high $15,221 per student—more than Ridgewood Park Elementary ($12,711) and Rolling Hills Elementary—yet achieves poor results, suggesting funding isn't translating into outcomes. The student-teacher ratio of 14.1 is favorable, indicating issues with instructional quality or support systems rather than overcrowding.

Despite these challenges, there is a bright spot: 5th-grade science proficiency reached 61% in 2025-2026, matching the state average and offering a foundation to build on. However, the school's recent rapid decline—from the 38th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 10th percentile—is more severe than peers. The contrast with Pinecrest Creek Charter, just 3 miles away, which serves a similar population but ranks in the 66th percentile with stellar math scores, highlights that Lockhart's issues are school-specific, likely tied to leadership and culture. For parents, this school requires careful consideration of its academic trajectory and support systems.

Open Quote Great small community school with loving principal and staff. State Grade does not give this school justice, this school is an "A" for parents, students, and staff. State Grades are based on one day of testing and does not include school involvement, teacher dedication, etc. Lockhart Elementary has really helped my ESE student and has been very caring to single parents. It is a great school with parent/teacher relationships and in a good community in Orlando. Close Quote
