Summary

Treasure Village Montessori Charter School in Islamorada, FL, is a small public Montessori school serving 179 students in grades PK through 8 within the Monroe district, offering a resource-intensive, low student-to-teacher ratio of 10.9:1 and spending $20,554 per student.

This school stands out for its exceptional performance in end-of-course exams, consistently achieving 100% proficiency in Algebra 1 and Civics for at least the last three years—a perfect score that surpasses nearby schools like Plantation Key School in Civics (84-91%). However, it shows a unique weakness in early elementary math, with only 42% of 3rd and 4th graders proficient in 2025-2026, far below the district average of 70% and 62%, and dramatically lower than Ocean Studies Charter (100% in 3rd grade). This pattern suggests the Montessori approach may not align with standardized math testing in early grades but pays off later, as students excel in upper grades and advanced subjects. The school also faces a chronic absenteeism rate of 25.1%, worse than the district average of 21.8% and significantly higher than Plantation Key School's 15.6%, which correlates with a past ranking dip in 2021-2022 when absenteeism peaked at 36.7%.

Compared to its neighbors, Treasure Village Montessori is a mixed bag. Key Largo School and Plantation Key School offer stronger early math performance and lower absenteeism, while Ocean Studies Charter, a similarly sized charter, achieves a higher state ranking (67th percentile vs. 55th percentile for 2025-2026) with lower spending. Despite high per-student investment, the school's overall academic rankings have been volatile, recovering from a 2-star rating in 2021-2022 to a 4-star in 2024-2025, but dropping to 3 stars for 2025-2026. This spending paradox—high resources not translating to top-tier scores across all subjects—highlights the need for targeted support in early math and attendance to fully leverage its Montessori strengths.

Open Quote TVM is a warm, family oriented, kid centered program. The school has a very hands-on approach to education. Your child will not be lost in the masses here. Both the elementary and middle school program strives to meet the individual learner at their level while constantly striving for excellence. Socially the program succeeds because of the active PTO, after school clubs, and overall parent and teacher involvement to promote the well being of the whole child. Your child & your entire family will make lots of friendships! The teaching staff is loving, challenging, and always caring about each student- academically and beyond. I have never seen this much teacher involvement at any other school. If I am being honest, the Montessori part of the education keeps getting less and less each year as the state gets more controlling. This is not to the benefit of the child or the teacher. Despite the statewide problems in public education, TVM is a shining example of a charter school that keeps getting better and better. While no school is perfect, TVM tries in earnest to meet challenges and solve problems that are brought to them. This has improved greatly in the past few years due to an increased investment from board members and parents. We have found the teachers to always be available and quite often go well beyond what they are required to do. The "new" teachers that have come in this year are excellent as well and brought an increased amount of passion to their classrooms. The motto of TVM is "It Takes a Village." and that could not be more perfect because the school's success comes from the efforts of all of the stakeholders. Close Quote
