Summary

Martin County High School in Stuart, FL, is a large traditional public high school serving 2,055 students in grades 9-12 within the Martin district. The school’s strongest asset is its exceptional graduation rate of 96.8%, which significantly outpaces both the district (93.7%) and state (92.2%) averages, reflecting a robust system for supporting students through to graduation. However, a growing concern is chronic absenteeism, with 35.6% of students chronically absent in 2023-2024—higher than the state average of 31.4% and the district average of 27.3%.

Academically, the school shows a notable contrast in math performance: 64% of students are proficient in Geometry (above the state average of 56%), but only 31% are proficient in Algebra 1 (well below the state average of 63%). This suggests a need for stronger foundational math support, particularly for incoming freshmen. Compared to nearby schools, MCHS sits in the middle of the pack. Jensen Beach High School (4.94 miles away) outperforms MCHS in most academic metrics and has a slightly higher graduation rate (98.6%), while South Fork High School (6.45 miles away) has similar academic performance but a lower graduation rate (94.7%) and a much higher chronic absenteeism rate (42.6%).

The presence of the elite Clark Advanced Learning Center (3 miles away) creates a "brain drain" effect, attracting the highest-performing students from MCHS’s attendance zone. This context makes MCHS’s strong graduation rate even more impressive, as it serves a broader, more diverse student body. With a lower poverty rate (35.6% free/reduced lunch) than its district peers, MCHS spends $10,960 per student—less than both South Fork ($12,466) and Jensen Beach ($11,214)—yet achieves a higher graduation rate than South Fork and lower chronic absenteeism than both, suggesting efficient resource use despite a higher student-to-teacher ratio (22:1).

Open Quote As a student, I completely discourage any parents from sending their students here. As a strait A student, who is involved in both athletics and clubs, I can honestly tell you the school is all aspects is crap. My tennis team has the worst coach I have ever had, and zero funding from the school. We don't even have a bus to go to away games. Even though were ranked third in the state, the school won't even pay for a bus for transportation. Instead our coach drives us to away games in his car. BEsides that as an AP student, I've passed my exams and excelled solely based on my own determination. Besides that the hostile environment I'm surrounded with is no help. THere are constant fights all around the campus, most are gang related. The campus is worn down and gross. I'v never used the school bathrooms in the past three years because they are so increadibly disgusting. Gas station bathrooms are cleaner. Classrooms are old, dusty, and smelly. Guidence counclers are thought of as a joke, they are absolutly useless and increadibly hard to see. When I needed a recomdation from mine, It took me a week before I could finally talk to her, and then almost two weeks before she finally wrote it. The student body is also less than impressive. MOst students party non stop and smoke and drink all weekend long. Students who aren't involved in this, study non stop and have zero social life. Ill be a senior next year and can honestly tell you my time here has been less than memorable. Close Quote
