Summary

Oakcrest Elementary School in Ocala, FL, is a PK-5 public school in the Marion district serving 631 students, with over 83% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, placing it in a high-poverty area. This school has historically ranked in the bottom 2-4% of Florida elementary schools, but it has shown a significant upward trend, climbing from the 2nd percentile in 2018-2019 to the 21st percentile in the 2025-2026 school year, suggesting that targeted interventions are beginning to work.

The most critical challenge at Oakcrest is its extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 43.1% in the 2023-2024 school year, which is dramatically higher than nearby schools like Dr. N.H. Jones Elementary (11.0%) and Madison Street Academy (5.0%). This absenteeism is a primary barrier to academic success, even though the school's per-student spending of $12,582 is in the middle of the pack for the area. Interestingly, Oakcrest shows a surprising strength in 5th-grade Science, with a 52% proficiency rate that exceeds the district average of 50%, while 5th-grade Math proficiency lags at 39%, 15 points below the district average. This suggests that the school may have an effective science curriculum or teacher, even as it struggles with other subjects.

Compared to Wyomina Park Elementary, which has nearly identical poverty rates (83.68% vs. 83.67%) and is located less than 2 miles away, Oakcrest is showing signs of improvement (21st percentile) while Wyomina Park remains stagnant (7th percentile). This "Oakcrest Paradox" indicates that the school may be implementing new, effective strategies that other high-poverty schools are not, making it a school to watch for best practices. The school's biggest challenge remains tackling chronic absenteeism, which is the root cause of many of its struggles, but the recent uptick in performance offers hope for continued progress.

Open Quote Both of my daughter's attend Oakcrest. Despite their ranks of being one of worst performance for elementary schools, I have seen first hand just how hard the entire staff is working VERY HARD to change their low scores. I've seen more and more progress in the right direction each year that my daughter's have been student's there
(4 years). This year I predict, this will be HUGE year in positive changes. With our new (amazing) principal Mrs. J. Diane leinbach Oakcrest has nowhere to go but up. She's already shown us how just how caring and dedicated she is to helping the numbers go up. I love most of all her commitment to communicate with the parents /guardians with each us through ALL recourses possible. Close Quote
