Summary

Apalachee Elementary School is a public school in Tallahassee, FL, serving 482 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Leon district, where a majority of families (65%) qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most significant challenge facing Apalachee is an exceptionally high chronic absenteeism rate—45.9% of students missed substantial school time in the 2023-2024 year. This rate is far higher than nearby schools like Buck Lake Elementary (9.8%) and W T Moore Elementary (18.2%), and it directly impacts learning. Academic proficiency in English Language Arts (39-43%) and Math (53-59%) is low compared to high-performing peers such as The School Of Arts And Sciences On Thomasville (ELA: 66-78%, Math: 68-82%). Interestingly, Apalachee spends more per student ($13,420) than many higher-achieving local schools, including Kate Sullivan Elementary ($10,541), suggesting that resources alone are not overcoming the attendance barrier.

Despite these struggles, there are some positive signs. The school shows a notable strength in 3rd Grade Math, where 59% of students met proficiency—close to the district and state averages. Additionally, 5th Grade scores improved significantly in 2025-2026, with Science rising to 36% and Math to 55%. The school’s state ranking has also inched upward from the 6th to the 17th percentile over the past few years. For parents, the key takeaway is that Apalachee’s core issue is getting students to class consistently; until that is addressed, even strong spending and pockets of academic success will have limited impact. The school’s experience mirrors that of nearby J Michael Conley Elementary School At Southwood, which also faces low performance despite lower poverty rates, pointing to local factors beyond income that affect learning.

Open Quote Apalachee is a public magnet school which provides an excellent arts, technology and academic education. I have had two children go through the school K-5 and each is doing quite well in middle school, including Orchestra. Apalachee gave my children the opportunity to study violin with a great teacher 1st-5th grades. Each year was a great experience and we remember the efforts of teachers and administration to help shape my children as students and citizens. Close Quote
