Summary

Mariner Middle School in Cape Coral, FL, serves 691 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Lee district, which ranks in the bottom 20th percentile of Florida districts.

Mariner Middle School has a notable strength in advanced math, with 91% of students proficient in Algebra 1 End-of-Course exams—far exceeding the district average of 56% and the state average of 63%. This is the highest Algebra 1 proficiency rate among nearby schools, including higher-ranked ones like Oasis Charter Middle School and Cypress Lake Middle School. However, the school struggles significantly in other areas. Only 38% of students are proficient in 7th-grade math, well below the state average of 53%, and 48% are proficient in 7th-grade English Language Arts. This creates a paradox where a select group of students excels in advanced math while the general student body underperforms in standard subjects.

A major concern is chronic absenteeism, which affects 37.6% of students—the highest rate among nearby peers like Diplomat Middle School and Caloosa Middle School. This rate is significantly higher than the state average of 31.4% and far above the 16.8% rate at Oasis Charter Middle School, which is only 5 miles away. The school's overall state ranking has declined from the 53rd percentile in 2020-2021 to the 32nd percentile in 2025-2026, earning a 2-star rating. While per-student spending ($10,853) and student-teacher ratio (21.2) are in line with nearby schools, the combination of high absenteeism and economic disadvantage (48.77% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch) appears to be driving the school's challenges.

Open Quote Don't believe everything you read! When we first moved here, I was very excited about "choosing" the school my daughter would attend. Because we enrolled late, our choices were limited and we were assigned Mariner Middle School; our last choice of schools within the county. At first, I was devastated ... near tears based on the reviews I read here. We had no choice and she began school in August after meeting with the school on a couple of occasions. During these meetings, we were assured that the new administration had "cleaned up" the school and that Mariner was a wonderful school to attend. After the first week of school, we received the call that she could attend our "first choice" school within the district. I left the decision to her, and she made the decision to stay at Mariner. She said that she liked the school; felt comfortable there and was happy with the atmosphere she was in. Since the curriculum is the same throughout the school system, there was absolutely no benefit in her relocating. As a parent, the ability of this school to make my child feel comfortable and accepted after only one week of school is amazing. I would recommend it to everyone. Close Quote
