Summary

Round Lake Charter School in Mount Dora, FL, is a high-performing public charter school serving 1,240 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade, and it stands out as an academic powerhouse in the Lake district. The school has earned a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for three consecutive years, ranking in the top 6% of all elementary schools in Florida—a remarkable climb from a 3-star rating a decade ago. This consistent upward trajectory reflects effective leadership and a strong school culture that sets it apart from nearby schools like Eustis Heights Elementary School and Triangle Elementary School, which rank in the bottom quarter of the state.

Academically, Round Lake excels with proficiency rates that are 20 to 40 percentage points higher than district and state averages across nearly all subjects and grade levels. For example, 4th-grade math proficiency hit 93% in the 2025-2026 school year, compared to 65% district-wide. The school also shines in high school readiness, with 100% of students proficient in Algebra 1 and Geometry End-of-Course exams. However, a notable anomaly is 7th-grade math, where proficiency dropped to 71%—still above the district average of 45%, but the lowest score for any subject at the school. This suggests a potential area for curriculum improvement.

Round Lake’s success is further highlighted by its low chronic absenteeism rate of 11.6%, far below the district average of 37.7% and rates of 40% or higher at neighboring schools like Seminole Springs Elementary School. The school also operates efficiently, spending $8,943 per student—significantly less than lower-performing peers such as Triangle Elementary School ($15,187) and Eustis Heights Elementary School ($14,135). This combination of high achievement, low absenteeism, and cost-effective spending makes Round Lake an "island of excellence" in a region where many schools face challenges like higher poverty rates and lower state rankings.

Open Quote I honestly do not understand why this school gets an A rating. The office people are rude and even laugh at you when you get mad at their lack of concern, help, and professionalism. Their school board & principal care nothing about their evil non caring teachers and staff. Their food is so horrible that I cannot eat it and feel bad for the kids. Hospital food is 10 times better! Well, for my child's own good and future, I have pulled her out and have started to homeschool her. Already she knows her times table and how to use a dictionary. :) Any good reviews given to this school, most likely are by one of their own teachers or some rich parent. Good luck to a poor parent and child..especially if the child has learning difficulties or ADHD. Nothing good to say about RLE!! Close Quote
