Summary

Vero Beach Elementary School is a public school in Vero Beach, FL, serving 593 students in grades PK-5 as part of the highly-rated Indian River School District.

The most remarkable thing about Vero Beach Elementary is its dramatic and sustained academic turnaround. Over the past decade, it has transformed from one of the lowest-performing schools in the state to a solidly average performer, now ranking in the 63rd percentile. This upward trajectory is unique among nearby schools. For example, while Rosewood Magnet School and Osceola Magnet School are consistently high-performing, and Dodgertown Elementary School is consistently low-performing, Vero Beach Elementary is in a class of its own for improvement. The school has invested heavily in this success, spending $14,123 per student and maintaining a low student-teacher ratio of 13.1—the lowest among all comparable elementary schools in the area. This investment appears to be paying off, especially in early math, where 79% of 3rd graders and 81% of 4th graders are proficient, significantly outpacing both district and state averages.

However, the school faces two clear challenges. First, there is a sharp drop in 5th-grade performance, with proficiency in both English Language Arts (55%) and Math (50%) falling well below district and state averages. This "5th-grade wall" is a critical area for focus. Second, chronic absenteeism remains high at 31.6%, nearly double the rate of high-performing nearby schools like Osceola Magnet (13.0%) and Rosewood Magnet (11.9%). Despite these hurdles, the school's consistent climb from a 0-star rating to a 3-star rating proves that effective strategies can overcome significant obstacles, making it a compelling choice for families seeking a school on a strong upward path.

Open Quote This school was built for growth and has many facilities the other schools do not. They have a Nutrition Lab on campus which is much like a cooking set for television where the kids can prep food and experiment with cooking and nutrition.
