Summary

North Tampa Success Center is a small, alternative-style school in Tampa, FL, serving grades 6-12 with just 48 students, where nearly 94% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, indicating a highly disadvantaged population. This school is designed for students who have struggled in traditional settings, but it faces immense challenges, including a staggering 88.7% chronic absenteeism rate—nearly three times the Hillsborough district average—and a 0% graduation rate over the last three years. Despite these hurdles, there is a glimmer of hope: the school’s state ranking jumped to the 18th percentile in 2025-2026, its highest in over a decade, and it shows surprising strength in Algebra 1, with 42% of students proficient, outperforming nearby Chamberlain High School (11%) and Seminole Heights Charter High School (12%).

What truly sets North Tampa apart is its extraordinary investment per student: $88,069 annually, which is nine times more than traditional schools like Hillsborough High School ($9,943) and Leto High School ($9,618). This funding supports an extremely low student-to-teacher ratio of 6.4:1, creating a highly individualized learning environment. However, this massive spending has not yet translated into student success, as the school’s primary battle is not academics but attendance and retention. The contrast with Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School, just 2 miles away, is stark: Brooks DeBartolo has a 98.7% graduation rate and 20.4% absenteeism, despite spending only $9,400 per student, highlighting how socioeconomic factors and student engagement play a critical role.

For parents, North Tampa Success Center is a high-cost, high-need institution that offers intensive support for students who have not thrived elsewhere, but it is fundamentally failing to graduate students due to extreme absenteeism. While recent improvements in test scores and ranking suggest potential, the school’s 0% graduation rate and 88.7% chronic absenteeism are red flags. If your child needs a highly personalized setting with small classes and targeted math support, this school may be worth exploring, but be aware that the environment is shaped by severe challenges that require strong family involvement to ensure consistent attendance and progress.

Open Quote Love this school! This is the place where they send all the trouble makers from other schools. If they robbed, bullied or worst they end up at North Tampa Alternative. A good chunk of these kids already know what a handcuff feels like as well as riding in the back of a police car. They got yanked out of a better school for a reason. This place will give them a taste of what their future will look like. I wish the school was a bit bigger so that all the losers can go here. I hope they would make this a permanent things for repeat offenders. Close Quote

Open Quote If your child needs to go to an alternative school I seriously suggest not making this the school. The principle will suspended your child 10 days and make them stay longer without doing any investigation. There is drugs, alcohol, fights, bullies, and plenty of violence. This school also doesn't teach anything, by the time my son with back to a normal school he was almost a full year behind every other kid. Close Quote
