Summary

Leto High School in Tampa, FL, is a large traditional public high school serving nearly 2,000 students in grades 9-12, located in the Hillsborough County School District, where over half of the student body qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.

Leto High School presents a striking paradox: it boasts an exceptional graduation rate of 95.2%, which is higher than the district and state averages and surpasses many nearby schools like Blake High School (87.5%) and Jefferson High School (94.1%). However, this success is overshadowed by a critically high chronic absenteeism rate of 54.2%—nearly double the district average and the highest among traditional high schools in the area. This suggests that while students who attend regularly are likely to graduate, a large portion of the student body is missing significant instructional time. In contrast, Alonso High School, located just over five miles away, has a much lower absenteeism rate (37.8%) and significantly higher academic proficiency rates, highlighting how attendance and socioeconomic factors strongly influence outcomes.

Academically, Leto consistently underperforms on core state assessments, with proficiency rates in Algebra 1 (46%), 10th-grade ELA (52%), and Biology (54%) well below state averages. A bright spot is U.S. History, where 70% of students are proficient, nearly matching the state average. The school’s per-student spending ($9,618) is in the middle range for nearby schools, indicating that the challenge isn’t a lack of funding but rather how resources are used to address absenteeism and foundational skills. For parents, the key takeaway is that Leto excels at getting students to graduate, but families should investigate how the school supports consistent attendance and academic growth to ensure their child is truly prepared for college or career.

Open Quote I have been at Leto High School all 4 years of my high school career, and I couldnt imagine myself anywhere else! We get a bad rep just because of the history at our school. Yeah we did have troubles in the past, but doesn't everybody? We shouldn't be judged now for whatever happened before we were even here. I don't care what anybody says, Falcons for life!
