Summary

Lake Magdalene Elementary School is a public school in Tampa, FL, serving 739 students in grades PK-5 within the Hillsborough district, and it stands out as a resilient academic anchor in a cluster of nearby schools that face significant challenges.

While the school's state ranking has slipped to the 36th percentile (2 stars) in recent years, it consistently outperforms its immediate neighbors. For example, nearby schools like Witter Elementary School, Mort Elementary School, and Twin Lakes Elementary School are ranked in the bottom 1-20th percentile statewide. Lake Magdalene is the only school in its immediate area that scores near or above district averages in multiple subjects, with a notable strength in 4th-grade math—proficiency reached 71% in the most recent year, which is 10 points above the district average. The school also achieves these results with lower spending per student ($11,936) compared to lower-performing neighbors like Miles Elementary School ($14,727), suggesting efficient use of resources. However, a major concern is chronic absenteeism: nearly one in three students is chronically absent, which is a key factor holding back academic progress.

For context, the high-performing Carrollwood K-8 School, located just 1.4 miles away, has a much lower absenteeism rate (20.7%) and a higher state ranking (71st percentile). Lake Magdalene sits in a "performance valley" between very low-performing schools to its south and Carrollwood to its north. While it remains the best option in its immediate cluster, its declining trajectory is a warning sign that needs attention to prevent further slippage.

Open Quote I was told this was "a great school" and I actually believed it until, I noticed staff and teachers acting very judgmental towards me. Especially the front office staff, they are rude, misleading and liars. I'm not impressed with this school or it's teachers, some need more training before being allowed to teach! Very Disappointed! Open Quote This school has some of the rudest teachers and staff. But my son so far has been enjoying his first two years here at this school. Being the sweetest of teachers would be the kindergarten and first grade. They're rules and regulations are starting to get ridiculous and if you ever as the parent break the smallest rule you will get SCOLDED right then and there. All in all if my son is happy and learning well then that's all that matters.

I forwarn you of the rude... Close Quote
