Summary

Hillsborough High School in Tampa, FL, is a large traditional public high school serving 1,679 students in grades 9-12 within the Hillsborough district, where over 50% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has earned a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past decade, reflecting stable but below-average performance compared to other Florida high schools, though its graduation rate has shown a strong upward trend, reaching 93.9% in the 2024-2025 school year—above both district and state averages.

Hillsborough stands out among nearby comprehensive high schools for its superior graduation rate, which significantly outperforms Chamberlain High School (81.5%), Blake High School (87.5%), and Middleton High School (86.8%). It also matches the state average in US History EOC proficiency at 74%, notably higher than Chamberlain (45%) and Blake (64%). However, the school faces a significant challenge with chronic absenteeism at 43%, which is nearly 12 percentage points higher than the district average and likely a key factor in its below-average test scores. In contrast, the nearby Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School, a high-performing charter with a 4-star rating and 98.7% graduation rate, has a chronic absenteeism rate of just 20.4% and serves a much lower poverty population.

Hillsborough presents a mixed picture: its graduation rate has risen impressively from 82.7% in 2021-2022 to 93.9% in 2024-2025, suggesting success in helping students complete diplomas, yet standardized test scores remain below district and state averages. The school has shown dramatic improvement in Algebra 1 EOC proficiency, more than doubling from 19% in 2022-2023 to 47% in 2025-2026, a rate of improvement not seen in nearby schools. With per-student spending ($9,943) and a student-teacher ratio (23.2) comparable to peers, Hillsborough's performance issues appear tied more to high absenteeism and student disengagement than to funding or overcrowding, making attendance a critical focus for families considering the school.
