Summary

Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School in Jacksonville, FL, serves 366 students in grades PK-5 within the Duval school district, operating in a high-poverty area where over 71% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has historically struggled academically, ranking in the bottom 20% of Florida elementary schools, but there are some signs of progress worth noting.

The most critical challenge at Sallye B. Mathis is a chronic absenteeism rate of 51.9%, which is alarmingly high and far exceeds district and state averages. However, this is a systemic issue across northwest Jacksonville, with nearby schools like Susie E. Tolbert Elementary School (76.0%) and Northwestern Legends Elementary (73.0%) facing even worse attendance problems. Despite this, there is a notable bright spot: in the most recent testing year, 5th graders achieved 56% proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA), which meets the state average and exceeds the district average—a stark contrast to nearby schools like Susie E. Tolbert (11%) and George Washington Carver Elementary (33%) in the same grade.

Interestingly, Sallye B. Mathis spends $15,645 per student, significantly more than many nearby schools, yet academic outcomes remain low. For comparison, Pickett Elementary School, just 2.8 miles away and serving a similar demographic, spends less ($12,848) but outperforms Mathis in every subject and grade level, ranking in the top 50% of Florida schools. This "spending paradox" suggests the school may need to re-evaluate how funds are used, focusing on evidence-based instructional strategies and attendance interventions to overcome the impact of chronic absenteeism and improve student success.

Open Quote Any parent that genuinely wants their child to succeed should refrain from sending their kid/kids to this school. From the principal on down, a group of liars that will place blame on one another. They focus so much on hounding the children during FSA testing to ensure their jobs are secure versus caring about the wellbeing and mental anguish of the kids. I sent my son to this school only to have him closer to my moms job, the high school next door, not knowing I was sending my son into an environment of teachers that are there for only a paycheck and disrespectful unprofessional office staff that really should have no form of attachment to kids. The 3rd grade math teacher sends home packets of 20 plus pages for a week, in combination with a 10 page English packet from another class, and a 5 page packet from science. In addition to these packets they have fluency and spelling work. This school does not consider family time as being essential. A child must have an equal balance of school, family, and social activity to evolve into a well balanced member of society. This was indeed my biggest mistake sending my son to Sallye B Mathis. His father is active duty military therefore our transition back to Jacksonville mid school year didn't present many opportunities for choices in his schooling along with myself having a job that requires travel, therefore the convenience of having him close to my mom, cost my son exposure to an environment he has never experienced along with a lot of evening dinners of explanations that this is not normal behaviors of adults or children. THIS LESSON WAS A MAJOR WAKE UP CALL FOR ME ALSO! Close Quote
