Summary

Love Grove Elementary School is a PK-5 public school in Jacksonville, FL, serving 380 students within the Duval County School District, where over half of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has historically struggled with academic performance, ranking in the 6th percentile statewide for the 2025-2026 school year and earning a 0-star rating, despite spending a relatively high $15,120 per student and maintaining a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.5:1.

The most critical challenge facing Love Grove is extreme chronic absenteeism, which has hovered around 50% for years—far exceeding the state average of 31.4% and nearly double the rate at the nearby high-performing River City Science Elementary Academy (24.3%). This attendance crisis is likely the primary driver of low academic outcomes, as even strong resources like small class sizes cannot compensate when half the students are regularly missing class. For context, River City Science Academy is only 1.56 miles away, serves a similar percentage of students from low-income households (57.69% vs. Love Grove's 52.89%), yet achieves 77-86% proficiency in English and math compared to Love Grove's 39-46%.

There is a glimmer of hope in math, where 5th-grade proficiency reached 46% in the most recent year—the school's highest score in that subject for that grade in recent years. However, overall performance remains persistently low across all subjects and grade levels. While Love Grove's challenges are not unique—nearby Duval Charter Scholars Academy also struggles with high absenteeism (53.1%) and low rankings—Love Grove's situation is particularly acute given its lower poverty rate compared to that charter school, suggesting that school culture and community engagement around attendance are key areas needing improvement.

Open Quote I had to complete an anti-bullying form as a result of my child facing racism from other students, but unfortunately, they were not treated seriously, and no action was taken. This marks the fourth instance of bullying, and it feels like the school merely pretends to care. To my dismay, I received another call today regarding an incident involving my daughter. She has attended multiple schools without encountering such problems before. I've never witnessed a school downplaying racism the way this one has. I am no longer willing to provide them with chances to address this issue, and I feel compelled to publicly express my dissatisfaction. It's essential for parents to consider alternative options for their children. I am committed to pursuing this matter further with the board of education. Close Quote
