Summary

Dixie County High School in Cross City, FL, serves 791 students in grades 7 through 12 and is the sole high school within the Dixie district, a rural area where 62.6% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most significant challenge facing Dixie County High School is a severe chronic absenteeism rate of 53.5%—more than triple the rates at nearby Trenton High School (16.4%) and Bell High School (18.3%), and well above the state average of 31.4%. This persistent issue, which has remained above 50% for four years, directly impacts academic performance. While Dixie County’s graduation rate is a bright spot at 92.2% (matching the state average and exceeding Trenton’s 89.4% and Bell’s 86.6%), its test scores lag behind. For example, 10th-grade ELA proficiency is 47% compared to 73% at both Trenton and Bell, and 8th-grade math proficiency is 60% versus 90% at Bell. The school also has a higher student-teacher ratio (20:1) than Trenton (17:1) and Bell (18.3:1), suggesting larger class sizes.

Despite these struggles, there are positive signs. Seventh-grade students at Dixie County are outperforming the state average in ELA, with 65% proficiency versus 62% statewide, indicating a potential strength in middle school instruction. The school’s spending per student ($11,154) is comparable to its peers, suggesting the core issue is not funding but getting students into classrooms consistently. The contrast with the nearby Gilchrist district—where Trenton and Bell rank in the 91st percentile statewide—highlights deep-rooted differences in community engagement and educational culture, even though these schools are located within 20 miles of each other.

Open Quote This school, for lack of a better term, is heck. There are fights weekly, much discrimination (especially against lgbt students) and the school has bad policies. If you get beat up, even if you don't fight back, you will get punished no questions asked. The best thing I can say about this school is that they at least have minor accommodations for mentally disabled people and the teachers try their best to try and teach the students, the majority of which will not pay attention. They really need to work on their help with people that have depression and anxiety because, frankly, a single poster in a busy hallway isn't going to do much. This goes for all schools in the district so, for the love of your child, do not send them here. Close Quote
