Summary

Terra Environmental Research Institute is a public magnet high school in Miami, FL, serving 1,644 students in grades 9-12 and consistently ranked among the top 10 high schools in Florida for nearly a decade.

Terra stands out for its exceptional academic performance, with proficiency rates between 95% and 97% across all core subjects—far exceeding district and state averages that hover around 60-75%. The school has maintained a perfect or near-perfect graduation rate (99.4%-100%) for five consecutive years, and its chronic absenteeism rate of 14.7% is less than half the district rate of 28.2%. This level of achievement is rare even among nearby specialized schools; while Archimedean Upper Conservatory also posts elite scores, Terra’s consistency across all subjects is notable. In contrast, comprehensive high schools like Miami Palmetto Senior High School (ranked 235th) and Southwest Miami Senior High (ranked 380th) are in a completely different tier.

What makes Terra particularly impressive is its efficiency: it achieves top-tier results with a relatively low per-student spending of $9,758 and a high student-to-teacher ratio of 26.5:1, suggesting its success is driven by curriculum, culture, and student motivation rather than small class sizes. The stark contrast with Kendall Greens High School, located just 0.39 miles away but ranked 774th with proficiency rates as low as 1-23%, highlights the powerful impact of school choice and magnet programs in the Miami-Dade district. For parents seeking a school with a focused academic mission, near-perfect graduation rates, and a highly engaged student body, Terra Environmental Research Institute is a model of excellence.

Open Quote am now a senior in this school and from what i experienced it is not your typical high school. Yes, it is true that we are a "nerd" school by that i mean that most students actually care about their grades (more so from a regular public school) that being going to terra means wanting to learn. There is no school spirit you definitely do not get a "high school experience". It feels like a middle school not even like a private middle school? As in any school there are AMAZING teachers and HORRIBLE (some are complete idiots) teachers there is nothing you can do about that.. Personally i do not like the principal she can be rather rude or disrespectful towards students but she must be doing something right if most students excel in academics. The vice principals are nice and understanding, and the counselors are very approachable and helpful. Also there is NO bullying or major drug problem here. Be prepared for packmen battles in lunch. The rest I can say the principal as a VERY high ego and thinks terra is the best when its not. UGH sorry for the ramble but for example the counselor told me to go get a signature from her and when i politely ask her to sign it she says "I DO NOT WANT A KID GIVING ME THIS" so rude first of all lady i am student, second i am 18 and i am adult and lastly i go to early admissions WHICH means that i am mature enough to go to college so if you can be a little bit more respectful towards your students maybe they wouldn't despise/be afraid of your so much. Another incident I had is that i had to get my ID but i go to miami dade for early admissions. The counselor and security guard told me it was alright to go ahead into the building to get it (without any uniform of course because i go to college) her assistant stops us in the middle of the hallway, screaming at us like a crazy maniac we even had a visitors tag on she then rush us to the principal (creating this whole necessary drama and treating us as criminals) and yells at us for absolutely no reason.. Dude can you at least be more respectful and ask kindly what we were doing and not create a whole scene. There are many more incidents throughout my high school experience but that is too much to write. At the end its what you make of it I hope to have helped some parent or student considering this school. PS I am not exaggerating anything here whatsoever everything is actually how its written. Open Quote This is an excellent school. I believe it is one of the best schools in Miami-Dade County. I recently attended open house to meet my daughter's teachers and for the second year in a row, I left the school stunned by the caliber of educators this amazing principle has been able to join together. The teachers are gifted in their ability to connect with the kids, motivate them, and allow their character and self confidence to develop. The kids, themselves, motivate each other to do better. They are students that are interested in learning and doing well; good influences all around. Honestly, this school is a rare gem. Its better than private. Close Quote
