Summary

Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School is a public school in Miami, FL, serving 1,019 students in grades 6 through 8 within the Miami-Dade school district, and it has earned a consistent 3-star rating over the past decade.

This school stands out as a powerhouse in advanced mathematics, with an exceptional 96% of students proficient in Algebra 1 and 100% proficient in Geometry on end-of-course exams—far exceeding district and state averages. This performance rivals top-tier nearby schools like Archimedean Middle Conservatory and Pinecrest Academy Charter Middle School, even though Jorge Mas Canosa’s overall state ranking (64th percentile) is lower than those schools. The school effectively identifies and accelerates its top math students, creating a "math magnet" effect. However, this strength is not mirrored in science, where 8th-grade proficiency (59%) is above the district average but significantly below high-performing neighbors like Archimedean (93%) and Herbert A. Ammons Middle School (84%).

While the school spends more per student ($13,027) than many nearby schools, its overall academic outcomes are not proportionally better. For example, Arvida Middle School spends less but achieves a higher state ranking and superior FAST scores across most subjects. A persistent challenge is chronic absenteeism, which, at 24%, has improved but remains much higher than top-performing schools like Herbert A. Ammons (6.9%). This suggests that while Jorge Mas Canosa excels in advanced math pathways, it may need to address resource allocation and attendance to drive broader academic improvement.

Open Quote My daughter is part of the Cambridge Studies program and I am very impressed by their parent participation as well as the teacher teaching styles - very interactive. The school has a focus on academics where there is a lot in place to support that success but they also invest a lot of energy in creating fun incentives for the kids such as exciting field trips outside of the state.
