Summary

Richmond Heights Middle School in Miami, FL, is a public school serving 345 students in grades 6-8 within the Miami-Dade district, where the majority of families qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school presents a fascinating paradox. On one hand, it has a severe chronic absenteeism problem—nearly 44% of students are chronically absent, which is almost three times higher than nearby high-performing schools like Mater Academy Bay Middle School and Herbert A. Ammons Middle School. This attendance crisis is likely the main reason the majority of students struggle with grade-level subjects like 6th-grade math and English. On the other hand, Richmond Heights excels in advanced courses: 91% of students are proficient in Algebra 1 and 90% in Biology 1, far outpacing district and state averages. This suggests the school has a strong program for its motivated, consistently attending students, but the general student body is underserved. The school also spends significantly more per student ($16,629) than many nearby peers, yet this investment hasn't yet translated into broad success.

Despite these challenges, there is a hopeful sign. After years of ranking in the bottom third of Florida middle schools, Richmond Heights jumped to the 47th percentile in the most recent data—its highest ranking in over a decade. This improvement is especially notable when compared to Cutler Bay Middle, a school just three miles away with similar demographics and absenteeism rates, but which hasn't shown the same upward trend. Richmond Heights is an academic outlier in a neighborhood filled with top-tier schools, but its recent progress suggests that new strategies may be starting to turn the tide.
