Summary

Hibiscus Elementary School in Miami, FL, is a public school serving 339 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Miami-Dade district, where 63.72% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school presents a fascinating mix of strengths and challenges, making it a school to watch closely. The most exciting news is its 5th-grade performance in the 2025-2026 school year, where 72% of students were proficient in both English Language Arts and Math—significantly outperforming district and state averages. This is a dramatic turnaround from the previous year and is the highest 5th-grade performance among nearby schools like Norwood Elementary School and Greynolds Park Elementary School.

However, this success is not consistent across all grades. While 5th graders are excelling, 4th-grade math proficiency is just 28%—the lowest among all nearby schools and a staggering 44 percentage points below the school's own 5th-grade math score. This "Jekyll and Hyde" pattern suggests that academic success may depend heavily on individual teachers or grade-level teams rather than a school-wide strategy. On a positive note, Hibiscus has made incredible progress in reducing chronic absenteeism, dropping from 39.6% in 2020-2021 to just 14.0% in 2023-2024—the lowest rate among all nearby schools and far better than the district average of 28.2%. This shows a strong recent focus on getting students to school consistently.

Interestingly, Hibiscus achieves these mixed results with relatively low spending of $14,646 per student, which is less than what nearby schools like Parkway Elementary School ($18,329) and Crestview Elementary School ($15,797) spend. This suggests the school is resourceful but may need to better allocate funds to address the 4th-grade math crisis. For parents, Hibiscus offers a school that is clearly capable of excellence, as shown by its 5th-grade success and improved attendance, but it also has significant gaps that require attention, particularly in 4th-grade math.

Open Quote I go here and this is a pretty good school. The teahers are so amazing!! Our new principal is also AMAZING!! We have a news crew (I'm on it), safety patrol and a few clubs. We might not look that good on the outside of the school but this is a really AMAZING school. I would recommend this school to any parent or student. The only downfall is that the lunch is okay.
