Summary

Golden Glades Elementary School in Opa Locka, FL, is a small Title I school serving about 210 students from Pre-K through 5th grade in the Miami-Dade district, where over 79% of families qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

One of the most striking things about Golden Glades is its spending: at $23,376 per student, it spends significantly more than nearby schools, including the top-performing North Dade Center For Modern Languages ($14,692) and its similar neighbor Bunche Park Elementary ($19,058). Despite this high investment, academic results have historically been low, though recent data shows a promising uptick—the school jumped to the 31st percentile and earned 2 stars for the first time since 2019. However, a major challenge is chronic absenteeism: 40.7% of students were chronically absent in 2023-2024, far above the district average of 28.2% and nearly 4.5 times higher than North Dade Center For Modern Languages (9.0%). This attendance crisis likely undermines the effectiveness of the school's resources.

Performance at Golden Glades can vary wildly from grade to grade—for example, 3rd-grade math proficiency hit 69% in 2025-2026, while 4th-grade math was only 38%. This "roller coaster" pattern suggests results depend heavily on individual teachers or student cohorts rather than a consistent school-wide system. On a positive note, 5th-grade science scores soared from 15% to 57% proficient in one year, hinting that recent interventions may be working. For parents, the key takeaway is that Golden Glades has the funding to succeed, but its biggest hurdle is getting students to class regularly. The school could learn from Bunche Park Elementary, just 0.64 miles away, which serves a similar community but achieves stronger outcomes with a lower student-teacher ratio and more efficient spending.

Open Quote This school is the worst school in Miami Dade County, Teacher do not care to teach the student, my two kids went there and either one learned anything . Although the security is excellent the other staff is poor.To much seating around looking cute and no work is getting done around there! They need a makeover..... Close Quote
