Summary

Piper High School in Lauderhill, FL, is a large public high school serving 2,201 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Broward County Public School District, and it presents a fascinating mix of strengths and challenges that parents should know about.

The most standout feature of Piper High School is its exceptional graduation rate, which reached an incredible 99.8% for the 2024-2025 school year—far above the district average of 91.4% and the state average of 92.2%. This isn't a fluke; the school has consistently posted rates above 95% for the past five years. However, this success is paired with a serious concern: a chronic absenteeism rate of 49.1%, which is nearly 50% higher than the district average and has more than doubled since 2019-2020. Academic proficiency in most subjects, like Algebra 1 (45% proficient) and 10th-grade ELA (52% proficient), lags behind district and state averages, though there is a clear upward trend in test scores over recent years. One bright spot is U.S. History, where 79% of students are proficient, matching the district average and exceeding the state average of 74%.

For context, just 1.8 miles away, Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy offers a stark contrast with a 97% proficiency rate in 10th-grade ELA, a chronic absenteeism rate of only 8.3%, and a 4-star ranking compared to Piper's 2-star rating. This comparison highlights that the challenges at Piper—particularly the high absenteeism—are not universal to the area. Nearby schools like South Plantation High School (51.7% chronic absenteeism) and J. P. Taravella High School (44.0% chronic absenteeism) face similar attendance struggles, but Piper's strong graduation rate and recent academic improvements suggest a school that is working hard to turn things around, even as it grapples with systemic issues.

Open Quote .piper is an amazing school. people have doubts about this school because of the events that have taken place in the past. Not every high school is perfect. you will still have fights and what not, as if your school is perfect. i wish i could say that about all schools. unfortunately, in this day and age, bad stuff still happens. either way. this school really is fun and gets involved with the students and they care about the students graduating. if you're a senior in trouble, the first quarter, the counselors will pull you over and help you to get your act back in place. as well goes for the rest of the students.
