Summary

Meadowbrook Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, FL, is a public school within the Broward district serving 693 students in grades PK-5, and it has historically ranked in the bottom quartile of Florida elementary schools, currently holding a 1-star rating (24th percentile).

The most critical challenge facing Meadowbrook is an extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 34.7% (2023-2024), which is dramatically higher than nearby high-performing schools like Somerset Academy Davie Charter School (13.2%) and Nova Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary (24.0%). This absenteeism is a key differentiator, especially when comparing Meadowbrook to Stephen Foster Elementary School, which is only 1.17 miles away and has a similar rate of economic disadvantage (55.7% vs. 53.15% free/reduced lunch). Stephen Foster is a 4-star school (72nd percentile) with a 23.9% absenteeism rate, while Meadowbrook struggles with a 1-star rating. The school also underperforms significantly in math, with 5th-grade proficiency at 46% compared to Stephen Foster's 82%.

Despite these challenges, there are signs of improvement. Meadowbrook's state ranking has risen from the 13th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 24th percentile in 2025-2026, and 3rd-grade ELA proficiency has doubled from 26% to 50% over the same period. The school spends $14,473 per student, which is higher than many higher-performing neighbors like Somerset Academy Davie ($9,912), suggesting that funding is not the primary issue. The most impactful lever for future improvement would be a targeted effort to reduce chronic absenteeism, which appears to be the core cultural and behavioral challenge holding the school back.

Open Quote I love this family environment created here at Meadowbrook. The teachers are knowledgeable and caring, and go the extra mile to make sure the kids are prepared. The school activities kept me informed and my child encouraged to participate in events in programs after school. My child attended from kindergarten to 5th grade and has done very well in middle school because of the foundation here. Close Quote
