Summary

Riverland Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 459 students in grades PK-5 within the Broward district, where 62% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and the school has faced significant challenges with academic stability and attendance.

Riverland’s academic performance has been highly volatile, with test scores swinging dramatically from year to year—for example, 3rd grade reading proficiency jumped from 32% to 72% in recent years, only to see 4th and 5th grade scores drop to the lowest in the area (39% and 33%, respectively). This pattern suggests the school may have strong early literacy programs but struggles to sustain growth in upper grades. A major concern is chronic absenteeism, which sits at 42%, far above the district (33.6%) and state (31.4%) averages, and higher than nearby Westwood Heights Elementary (32.5%) and Croissant Park Elementary (34.8%). This absenteeism is likely a key driver of the school’s instability.

Interestingly, Riverland spends $15,777 per student—more than high-performing neighbors like Stephen Foster Elementary ($13,911) and Croissant Park Elementary ($13,927)—yet this spending hasn’t translated into consistent results. In contrast, Westwood Heights Elementary, just half a mile away, has a similar poverty rate (67.6%) but achieves much more stable, mid-range performance with lower absenteeism. This comparison highlights that Riverland’s challenges are not inevitable for the neighborhood but are tied to the school’s internal culture and attendance issues. Without targeted interventions to improve attendance and build consistent instruction across all grades, Riverland is likely to continue its pattern of unpredictable, low performance.

Open Quote I went here a couple of years ago and it wasn't too good. The food was decent I guess but sometimes it was a bit gross. Most of the students I was with weren't too friendly, a couple harassed me (sexually and physically), they also got into drama and fights. But the staff are pretty nice if you listened to them well, the students gave them a headache majority of the time. I also need to mention the basketball hoops, the hoops are all broken and students like to climb them. I wouldn't exactly recommend going here, but it's a safe and secure school from trespassers. Open Quote This is an excellent school! The principal gets very involve in your child education. He always encourages students to do their best. He always takes his time to speak at every award assembly to congratulate the students and encourage them to keep the good work and do their best every day. The principal returned my call the very same they, took time to listen, gave me a conference for the very next day and addressed the situation very professionaly. Also teachers go above and beyond to assist students. I would highly recommend this school! Close Quote
