Summary

Odyssey Charter School in Palm Bay, FL, is a large K-12 charter school serving 1,917 students within the Brevard district, and it stands out as a high-performing, comprehensive school that significantly outperforms district and state averages across nearly all academic and behavioral metrics.

Despite its "Alternative" classification—which often implies a specialized program—Odyssey functions as a mainstream, top-choice charter school. It boasts an exceptional graduation rate of 98.9%, well above the district's 92.7% and state's 92.2%, and even higher than the 97.5% rate at the nearby Pineapple Cove Classical Academy. The school also has a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of just 12.2%, compared to the district's 21.1% and state's 31.4%, indicating strong student engagement. This is a stark contrast to the South Area Alternative Learning Center, which has a 76.6% chronic absenteeism rate. Academically, Odyssey excels across all levels, outperforming the district in 14 out of 16 subject/grade-level tests in the most recent year, including strong showings in early literacy (80% in 3rd Grade ELA vs. district 63%) and high school sciences (89% in Biology 1 EOC vs. district 75%).

Odyssey achieves these outstanding results with efficient spending of $9,353 per student, which is comparable to other high-performing charters like the Pineapple Cove Classical Academy At West Melbourne and significantly less than the Devereux Hospital ($24,485) and South Area Alternative Learning Center ($14,898). While overall performance is stellar, a potential area for attention is middle school math, where proficiency in 6th and 8th grade math (49% and 47%) dipped below the district average (74% and 62%). This sustained excellence, combined with a declining chronic absenteeism rate, suggests a strong and improving school culture and instructional program.

Open Quote Regarding the junior/senior campus: The teachers are good however the administration leaves something to be desired. A lot of these reviews are fake. “Friends” are asked to beef up the ratings. They seem to only care about ratings and money. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers at OCS truly care about their students. They spend hours collaborating with peers and instructional coaches to make sure students are given the best possible learning opportunities. The strive to help students reach their full potential, not just “covering the material,” but gaining a full understanding, meeting and exceeding goals. While academics and safety are priority, teachers also know the importance of building those relationships with their students, ensuring students feel comfortable in their environment. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers bring the rigor. Odyssey is an A rated school. The riff raff factor among the student body is less than half of the other schools. There is little tolerance for delinquent behavior. The college bound student is best served here and most appreciative of the setting while those looking for the path of least academic resistance toward their diploma should attend elsewhere Close Quote

Open Quote Odyssey is the top performing school in Palm Bay and all surrounding areas. It offers a top notch education for pre-school through 12th grades. Lots of collegiality. Well rounded extra-curricular and a growing athletic program. If you want an academically rigorous school and a school that cares about your child, this is as good as it gets. Close Quote

Open Quote Teachers barely help students and are really rude. I would say they treat the kids like it's an elementary school and my kid is in high school. This is pathetic. No funds towards athletics. The only good coach they had for basketball got fired and they had 3 in one year and a poor season. There is nothing this school has that any other school doesn't. DON'T send your kid here. Close Quote

Open Quote Class sizes are too large! Any child that doesn't fit the "cookie-cutter" mold will probably have difficulties in this school. Close Quote
