Summary

Sandburg Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 570 students in the San Diego Unified district, consistently ranking as a strong-performing school within the top 20% of all California elementary schools.

The school stands out for its effective support of all students, particularly in maintaining strong academic scores that exceed both district and state averages while also making impressive gains in student attendance. Compared to some nearby schools in the same district, like Walker Elementary and Hage Elementary, Sandburg achieves these solid results while managing its resources efficiently, spending less per student. It's important to note that schools in the neighboring Poway Unified district, such as Sundance Elementary and Deer Canyon Elementary, generally show higher rankings and lower absenteeism, highlighting a notable performance difference between the two districts.

While Sandburg's overall rating has seen a slight dip in recent years, it remains a high-achieving school with notable strengths. The school has shown remarkable success with specific student groups and dramatically reduced its chronic absenteeism rate, which is now well below the district average. Parents may want to note that performance varies by grade and subject, with math scores dipping in 4th grade before recovering, and that the school is actively working to address performance gaps for certain student populations.
