Summary

Mason Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 538 students in the Mira Mesa area of San Diego, operating within the San Diego Unified school district, and it currently holds a 3-star rating placing it in the middle range of schools statewide.

Academically, the school's test scores are generally close to state averages but below the San Diego Unified district averages. A significant challenge is chronic absenteeism, with over a quarter of students missing too much school—a rate much higher than nearby schools like Jerabek Elementary or Miramar Ranch Elementary. The school serves a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and while it spends more per student than some higher-performing neighbors, it has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade from consistent 4-star ratings.

Interestingly, Mason is surrounded by several higher-performing schools, such as Jerabek Elementary and Jonas Salk Elementary, suggesting potential for improvement. Key areas for focus could include reducing absenteeism and providing targeted support for specific student groups, such as those in special education, where the school's effectiveness ranking is particularly low. The school's performance in science shows the largest gap compared to the district average.

Open Quote My daughter went to Mason until we moved . She loved it especially Mrs. Mercado, she is a wonderful teacher very dedicated to her students. The school encourages parents to volunteer at the school, just helping the teacher out, by cutting or sorting organizing things for the class. I enjoyed doing this and I wanted to show my daughter that school is something important. I was skeptical at first, because the school was rated 3 starts out of 5, but in my opinion the kids, for being just in kindergarten were learning how to read or were able to read by the end of the year was pretty impressive. This is a whole year round school no long summer vacation. They have one month of vacation in Christmas spring and summer. What I think was great that math and reading where link online and you can learn with your child at home. I loved this school and I would go to this school again, if we ever move back here.
