Summary

George K. Porter Middle is a public middle school serving about 1,000 students in grades 6-8 in Granada Hills, part of the Los Angeles Unified school district, and it stands out for achieving strong academic results while serving a community where many families face economic challenges.

The school is on a clear upward trend, improving its statewide ranking to the 79th percentile and earning a 4-star rating, which is particularly impressive because this progress has happened as the number of students needing economic assistance has increased. What truly differentiates Porter is its exceptional effectiveness with specific student groups; it ranks in the 87th percentile for Hispanic students and the 89th percentile for students from low-income families, outperforming nearby schools like San Fernando Middle and Patrick Henry Middle which have similar demographics. The school also does a better job than most at ensuring students are in class, with a chronic absenteeism rate lower than both the district and state averages.

While there are areas for growth, such as science achievement and support for English Language Learners, the school's overall trajectory is positive, including dramatic recent improvements in services for special education students. Compared to other schools in the area, Porter delivers these strong outcomes in a cost-effective manner, spending less per student than some neighboring schools that achieve lower results. This consistent performance places it within a higher-performing cluster of north-area schools that includes Robert Frost Middle and Oliver Wendell Holmes Middle.

Open Quote Porter has gone downhill in recent years. Many of the great teachers have left or retired, and what’s left is a school that feels unorganized and indifferent. Bullying is a huge issue in the Gifted Magnet, and the school turns a blind eye to it. The emotional well-being of students is clearly not a priority here.

The staff is largely unresponsive and often incompetent. Teachers rarely answer emails, and communication with parents is almost nonexistent. The facilities are outdated, worn down, and in desperate need of attention. There are no real school events, parent involvement is practically nonexistent, and the PTA has no presence.

Don’t be fooled by the uplifting school tours — they present an image that simply isn’t the reality. The truth is, the environment is negative, the community is disengaged, and the support for students is minimal. This school is not what it claims to be, and I would strongly caution parents to look elsewhere. Close Quote
