Summary

Cowan Avenue Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 377 students in the Los Angeles Unified district, notable for its strong academic performance and significant improvement in recent years.

The school stands out for achieving test scores in English and Math that are well above both the district and state averages, which is particularly impressive given that over 60% of its students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. For comparison, nearby schools like Westport Heights Elementary and Loyola Village Fine And Performing Arts Magnet, which serve similar student populations, have significantly lower proficiency rates. Cowan Avenue also operates efficiently, spending less per student than many surrounding schools while maintaining a favorable student-teacher ratio that allows for more individual attention.

While the school's trajectory is positive, moving from a 2-star to a 4-star rating, it does face a notable challenge with chronic student absenteeism, which is higher than at neighboring schools like Kentwood Elementary and WISH Community. Performance can vary between grade levels, with exceptional strength in 6th-grade English and 3rd-grade Math. Overall, Cowan Avenue represents a compelling option for families, demonstrating it can deliver solid academic results and effective support for its students within the public school system.

Open Quote Great school, EXCELLENT Gifted & High Ability Magnet program. Too bad it only goes from 3rd-6th. The 6th Grade Magnet is the absolute very best class I could have ever asked for. The teacher, Mrs. Gaines-Jones, is far beyond OUTSTANDING. She inspires and motivates each of her children to strive and achieve their greatest potential. The calculation of the separate Cowan's Gifted Magnet API is actually much higher, in the mid-900s! My 2 children have been here since Kindergarten and both are performing extremely well in school and on the standardized tests. Like most a schools, you get select few parents who seem to have challenges and more personal issues, but overall I think it is a quality school with a very family oriented environment compared to most schools.
