Summary

Sycamore Rocks Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 667 students in the Apple Valley Unified district, operating in a high-need area where a large majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

While the school's overall academic ranking has declined over the past decade and remains in the bottom quartile of California schools, it shows important strengths, particularly in mathematics where it outperforms the district average. The school also serves its English Language Learner students relatively well, ranking above the state average for this group. However, it faces significant challenges with chronic student absenteeism, which is higher than both district and state averages, and its science performance lags considerably behind. An unusual pattern is seen in grade-level math scores, where third graders perform well but proficiency drops dramatically by fifth grade.

Compared to nearby schools like Sitting Bull Academy and Rio Vista School of Applied Learning, which perform better within the same district, Sycamore Rocks has a higher absenteeism rate. The school's per-student spending is moderate and it achieves its academic results more efficiently than some lower-performing schools in the area, such as Phoenix Academy. Recent data suggests the school's years-long decline in ranking may be stabilizing.
